Housed in a fairly nondescript building about ten or so minutes’ walk from Kyōto Station, the new teamLab Biovortex is a highly interactive digital art museum – or, as I prefer to think of it, a funhouse masquerading as an art facility. That isn’t meant as criticism so much as an observation: whatever meaning or interpretive value you might find in the art is very quickly overtaken by the sheer fun of exploring what is, ultimately, a gigantic play facility.
There are stairs aplenty, along with darkness, constantly changing lighting and uneven surfaces, so some parts may prove challenging for visitors with mobility or other accessibility needs. Wheelchair access is possible, but not every artwork can be experienced in a wheelchair, and some works require the use of steps. The large athletic section, with its slides, jumping activities and sloping floors, is very much geared towards physical play. I would also note that, for those of us who process the world in slightly different ways, the combination of light, sound, movement, smells and crowds can be a lot at times, so allowing some opportunity for sensory recovery – both during and after the visit – is worth bearing in mind. All told, it was well worth the time and money, and I’d happily return for another go.
